Bijou

Patrick Modiano is a highly successful writer in France. Author of several novels, was born in 1945 and the name reveals the son of an Italian jew who emigrated to France in 1942 where, in occupied Paris, he meets what will be the mother of Patrick. Mysterious character, the father, deported, is rapidly released through the intervention of some authoritative figure. Always occupied by his business meets occasionally in hotels or resorts, the son who, at age 17, decides not to review it again and you disinteresserà him, even his death. These biographical elements leave indelible marks in Patrick, who became a writer (Raymond will Queneau who introduced the literary world), will emerge in his work, featuring the theme of identity and that (connected to the first) of the relationship with their parents.
The novel The Petit Bijou [2001, tr. com. with the tit. Bijou , 2005] is the story of a young woman, Thérèse, in a subway station in Paris thinks he recognizes his mother in the crowd rush hour. He had not seen since she was little and started to follow her, fascinated by his threadbare coat yellow. Attempts to approach, the lack of courage to approach it in a direct face to face, the gradual discovery of the miserable condition in which she lives is the opportunity to resurface memories of abandonment, displacement, loneliness and an awareness of their precarious existence. From the archive messy memory resurfaces the failure of the mother as a dancer, which is matched by that of Thérèse girl who had starred alongside his mother in a forgotten film. She was given the stage name of Bijou and that name has remained as the mark of his failure, of rejection and disappointment maternal towards him. The final suicide attempt could be the start of a new beginning, but only a optimism can do so free thinking.
Some character names seem to refer to Balzac, however, the scenario is a scenario of stark modernity: there are no cypresses (Carducci), the mountains from the water source (Manzoni), stretches of hawthorn (Proust), but the big city made up of roads, stations, subways, cafes and pharmacies, a city of labyrinthine maze mirror of the soul. The heartbreaking story presents us with the crudest of poverty, the lack of identity and references to attachment figures and models: what seems obvious when you receive a gift (family name) becomes a unattainable goal for those who, on the outskirts of life, trying to get there chasing dreams, fantasies, ectoplasm as unlikely and mysterious yellow coat.
